New wheels for the new year

It’s festive and to start your 2014 off on a memorable note, Cresta Shopping Centre is feeling generous. Walking through the mall over the weekend, the shops were buzzing with eager shoppers ready to spend and stand a chance to walk away a winner.

Be a winner with Cresta and try your luck at walking away with tons gift cards worth a total value of R18 000 each month to use as you please. As if that’s not enough already, you could also possibly start your year off on a sassy note with the grand prize of driving off in a brand new Peugeot 208GTi.

To be one of the lucky shoppers all you need to do is to  simply spend R500 or more at the mall, grab one of the competition envelopes at the info kiosk near Checkers and attach your original till slip/s to it.

With all your Christmas shopping, grocery shopping and even self-spoil splurges, collecting till slips to the value of R500 should not be all that tough and with such amazing prizes, it’s definitely worth the spend of every cent.

Till slips from various stores can be combined to make up the R500 minimum spend. You are then eligible to be entered into the competition every month between 1 September 2013 and 31 May 2014. You can enter as many times as you like, provided that your entry is accompanied by original till slips.

So hurry up, make your way to Cresta Shopping Centre and try your luck. The festive fever is of a high dose this year, so who knows? You could just be a lucky winner.

With only one more sleep until Christmas, I am one of those people running around frantically looking for Christmas gifts, especially because I have family in town visiting over the festive period.

Being from a smaller city, I decided to take my family to Sandton City to browse around the shops and have a bit of a look around, that way also giving me some idea of what they would want as gifts.

However, I felt a little bit like I had shot myself in the foot because of all the different likes received at the different goods at the many stores.

Almost giving up hope on what to get each of them, I tried to simplify the process for myself by letting them decide for themselves what they wanted to get and my answer came packaged in a gold wrapped envelope and two words…gift card.

Being somewhat of a confusing person to buy a gift for, myself, I’m not sure why I hadn’t thought of this idea sooner.

Gift cards are always great options to get as Christmas, birthday or even anniversary gifts, that way, as the buyer, you aren’t left with the worry of whether or not your gift will be enjoyed or even kept and as the gift receiver, the option is yours as to how you want to spend your gift and it’s a much safer and more modern way rather than gifting someone with cash.

So off I went and purchased my gift cards, which was a pleasant experience. All I needed to do was to go to one of the gift card counters at the mall, ask for the amount I wanted and present my ID or driver’s license before paying.

Sandton city is one of the largest shopping malls in South Africa and with over 300 stores and hundreds of thousands of shoppers a month, both locally and internationally, their gift card offering is world class. The Sandton City MasterCard gift card was launched in 2007 and has been tremendously popular since.

Gift cards, like the ones sold at Sandton City, have been proven to increase sales and feet within a shopping centre, make use as great marketing tools and are a step ahead from paper vouchers as used in the past.

As a customer, needless to say, gift cards are definitely the future in shopping freedom.

Festive fever has hit with full force and to reward you for all your Christmas spending, Eastgate Mall wants to give back to you.

This season, Eastgate Mall is the gift that keeps on giving as they give shoppers the opportunity to walk away R50 000 richer with their gift card giveaway. Spend R300 or more at the mall, pop your slip in their draw box at the customer services counter and stand a chance to win a R50 000 gift card, it’s as simple as that.

With the silly season upon us, spending R300 on almost anything from groceries to presents is quite an easy feat and definitely worth it if you could possibly walk away with an extra R50 000 in your pocket. Now you can spend your winnings on all of your heart’s desires, whether it be that “self-spoil” that you’ve been eyeing for months or even a home revamp, it’s all up to you.

With a gift card, you can now manage your spending, spend without the concern of losing cash or having it stolen. You are also able to check and manage your card balance using the whatsonmycard application, which allows you to see how much you’ve spent and how much more shopping you can do using your card. All you would need to do is to visit the whatsonmycard site, enter your card number and the security code displayed, and just like that, your card balance will be made available to you. The application is available to all Android, Apple and BlackBerry devices.

Shopping mall gift cards, like the one being given away at Eastgate Mall, are valid for three years giving you more than enough time to decide what you would spend your winnings on.

The competition is only valid for purchases made to the value of R300 or over between December, 6 and December, 22 2013 and the draw for the winner will be done next week Monday, December, 23.

Tis the season to be jolly and Build A Bear Workshop is spreading the Christmas joy with their great gift card special this season.

A newby to the phenomenon that is Build A Bear, I felt like a kid in a candy store…or maybe even a kid in Santa’s toy workshop, caught in awe by the amazing idea of being able to build my very own teddy bear.

Whether it’s a present for you, a little brother or sister, a loved one or even for a stranger, Build A Bear is definitely your one stop shop to find the cutest and cuddliest littly furry friends and even the cutest teddy outfits to keep them fashion forward.

Now you too can spread the furry love to as many people as possible, because when you spend R350 or more at your nearest Build A Bear store, receive a R100 gift card for only half the price at R50. Gift cards can be used for rewards and promotions by stores.

Last week, I visited the Sandton City branch of the store, where I had my very first Build a Bear experience.

With my R100 gift card, I was able to purchase, stuff, wash and type out a birth certificate for my new furry friend and more than just walking away with a new teddy, you walk away with a whole new experience.

Coming in different colours and designs, the Build A Bear Workshop gift cards are playful, easy and fitting to the child like theme portrayed in the shop. The staff are also very friendly, offering their assistance wherever possible.

Walking through the Build A Bear store, I could easily spend R350, or even more on all the cute goodies that they have in store and then still shop some more as I reap the benefits of a 50% discount on a gift card as a reward.

WIth my R100 gift card, I chose to build my own teddy bear named “Cuddles”, which would then be donated to kids at a local charity in Yeoville, Johannesburg, The Nazareth House.

First I had a look around at all the different furry friends and made my pick of which one I wanted stuffed. After choosing the perfect white bear, I could then take it through the process of watching it being stuffed, even giving it sound effects, washing it and then naming it and issuing its very own birth certificate.

And Voila! in about 10 minutes, I got to walk out the store with my new fluffy companion, ready to hand him over to a new home and a new owner. Spread the Christmas cheer in a fluffy new way this year at Build A Bear and get discounted too!

Shoprite savings are hot this season and now you can benefit from their new Shoprite EeziCoupons programme, offering you discounts on your buys while on the go.

Unlike the old school way of collecting coupons from magazines, newspapers or via the post, Shoprite is offering their customers the convenience of gaining instant discounts while taking their desired purchases off the shelves, simply by dialling a discount redemption code and receiving a sms to redeem the discount.

As I was walking down one of the aisles at a local Shoprite last week, I was intrigued by the bright red and yellow poster alerting me of how much I could save on certain products. Eager to find out how it works, I followed the instructions on the poster to dial *120*569*1#, by doing so, I received an SMS to my cellphone giving me a coupon which I then presented at the till and instantly received the discount off of my purchase.

I can’t think of anyone who does not enjoy gaining discounts or bargains, especially during this time of the year and for all Shoprite shoppers, if like me, you’re new to EeziCoupons, the group have introduced an application compatible to all smarphones that can be found at Now shopping and finding out the latest discounts and specials on offer is just a browse away.

Get access to specials, Christmas recipes, a Shoprite newsletter and so much more. Similar to what other stores such as Woolworths, Sportsmans Warehouse and Makro are doing, SMS vouchers are gaining rising popularity because of their simplicity, convenience and their ease to access.

No more concerns of carrying paper vouchers or the worry of loss or theft, SMS vouchers are revolutionising the world of discount redemptions.

Now it seems that instead of worrying about how much you’ll spend at a store, you biggest concern should rather be about having a fully charged cellphone battery.

The Christmas season is always filled with the hustle and bustle of running around, trying to figure out if you’ve bought enough presents for everyone, if  you’ve budgeted enough for your spends and if the grocery cupboards are stocked up for all your visitors. I now understand why this time of the year has also been dubbed, “the silly season”, because it seems that the amount of spending – even sometimes without realising it – can become quite silly and overwhelming.

Various banks. including FNB eBucks, Nedbank Greenbacks, Standard Bank UCount Rewards and Investec’s Dividents Rewards Programme, have introduced their very own rewards programmes for times just like these. Simply by swiping your card, depending on who you bank with, you can instantly gain rewards which can be saved and used when you need that extra cash to spend.

Because I bank with Absa, I was able to reap the benefits of the Absa Rewards programme where I pay only R21 a month to gain rewards everytime I swipe my debit card. Rewards redemptions vary in amounts, depending on where I swipe my card, offering me highter redemptions if I swipe at any of Absa’s redemption partners.

You can imagine my surprise this week when I realised I could spend a little bit more without the added expense, all thanks to my Absa Rewards and my Pick n Pay Smart Shopper account.

My family have decided to visit me in Johannesburg for Christmas this year. Being Christmas time, I want to be able to spoil them with yummy treats and sweet goodies, especially for my younger little cousins, making their Christmas away from home that much more memorable.

My Absa Rewards, which I had gained from swiping my Absa debit card at various outlets, allows me the option of choosing to redeem my rewards either as cash, airtime, shopping vouchers, giving back to charity or redeeming through their Redemption Partners (Pick n Pay Smart Shopper points or Dischem Benefit Programme points). This came in really handy to get those extra grocery goods for the family and redeeming my Absa Rewards as Pick n Pay Smart Shopper points was such an easy process.

All I had to do was to call the Absa Rewards customer care line on 0861 788 888. Once I was on the line, I prompted to press number “1” on my phone which gave me the option of redeeming my rewards. I was then put through to an operator who was very helpful in converting my rewards to my Smart Shopper points, now redeemable at any Pick n Pay. All I had to do was to provide him with my South African ID number, he confirmed my details, asked how much of my rewards I wanted redeemed as Smart Shopper points and just like that, it was done.

To make things even better, because of this kind of redemption of my Absa Rewards, I gained an extra 15% on the amount redeemed, giving me even more to spend.

For security purposes and to keep me, as the customer, in the know about my transactions, I received two SMSes, one alerting me of my redemption transaction and another letting me know what my remaining rewards balance was.

You can redeem your Absa Rewards online too if you are registered with their online or cellphone banking. If not, visit their website to sign up.

As easy as that, I was able to go to my nearest Pick n Pay and spend using my Smart Shopper points, without any extra expense to me. Now I can spoil my family, with no extra costs incurred. I’ve rewarded myself this Christmas, why don’t you?

During the busy Christmas season and the sudden spike in shopping trends, everybody is out to look for a bargain wherever they can get one.

This season, Woolworths Rewards (WRewards) members are in luck, as you can score a R50 discount off clothing purchases to the value of R250 or more.

As a WRewards member myself, I was pleasantly surprised to get an SMS issuing me with a voucher number, making me liable for the great discount. This came just at the right time, as Christmas time is always perfect to cash in on those discounts to get gifts, buy some last minute goods or even just to treat yourself.

SMS vouchers are a great way of issuing vouchers and helps to reduce the risk of voucher loss and theft. When a customer receives a SMS voucher, they will need to present the SMS at the preferred shopping centre or retailer, in this case, Woolworths, where the voucher can then be redeemed directly from the SMS. Many banks are using these kinds of vouchers for their rewards programmes like Absa Rewards, FNB eBucks and others as well as retailers like Sportsmans Warehouse, Woolworths and Makro to name just a few. They have all moved with the times and have become technologically savvy in issuing these kinds of vouchers.

So off I went to my nearest Woolworths store, excited to purchase my goods and reap the benefits of my R50 discount on any clothing items, except for the Country Road and Trenery brands.

I must commend the staff at the Woolworths branch who were very friendly and helpful to answering any questions I had to ask about the discount voucher, from whether or not it qualified to both adult and children clothing purchases, underwear and the likes, which it did apply to.

After gathering all my wanted purchases, I headed to the till where the cashier rung up all my items and swiped my WRewards card, allowing me to, on top of my discount, gain rewards on my purchases. She then requested for my SMS voucher number that was sent to me. After entering the number into the system, automatically R50 was deducted off my total amount, leaving me happy and saving some on my buy.

Christmas is the time for giving and Woolworths have remained true to just that by rewarding their WRewards clients. If the Christmas spirit alone isn’t enough to have you feeling happy, redeem your Woolies R50 discount and add that little bit of extra cheer to your season.

*The WRewards discount is only valid until 14 December 2013 and includes all clothing purchases except for the Trenery and Country Road brands.
