Though few are around anymore, book stores form part of what is left of the “hard copy” go-to place when looking for a good read. It may be a thriller, romance, action, fiction or non-fiction that one is looking for, the old school way is to go to your nearest book store and grab one off the shelf.

A week ago I was posed with the scenario: buy a kindle book online, or make my friend happy for her birthday with a hard copy of her favourite authors latest thriller. When I remembered how neat and tidy she keeps her bookshelf inside her study-I knew the answer. We all may have encountered this in our lives, and the hardest part was the choice was to figure out which was a good seller and new on the shelves.

This problem could be solved with a more easier method, especially for a book store with a constant flow of customers, and potential buyers who are purchasing as a gift. I immediately imagined if I were a book store and thought of ways in which Tutuka’s prepaid card system could help me in my book shopping endeavors.

If I were a book store I would consider several prepaid options for my store:

  1. Gift cards
  • Gift – If for example a customer needs to buy a gift for a friend or a family member. Perhaps the person that they are buying for is fussy, so as a book store merchant I could advise them to buy a gift card so whoever they are buying for can pick what they like.
  • These gift cards could also come in handy for buying for boyfriends or girlfriends, especially when you don’t know which book/novel to get for them, so this offers them the opportunity to shop for what they like
  • Manage returns –This is helpful if I were a book store merchant who has customers who either received a gift that they weren’t a fan of or was not the correct author or even for those who are a little more fickle minded. Instead of handing a customer cash back when they return an item, give them a gift card for the same value and don’t lose out on the sale.

2.   SMS vouchers

I could use and issue SMS vouchers at my book store in instances where perhaps a customer wants to buy book/novel/item for a friend or family member living in another city, but would prefer them to pick their own, whatever the case may be. My customers could buy SMS vouchers from me, send them to the person they are buying for and the shopping can begin, provided that the purchase is made at one of my chain stores.

3.     Rewards cards

After all these purchases at my store, I can reward my customers for their loyalty and give them rewards cards that they can swipe every time they make a purchase. Points will eventually earn a free item from my store. It will also help move customers up rewards tiers to become eligible for discounts.

4.      Incentive cards

To encourage my staff to make sales I give them a commission in the form of points, similar to how a rewards card would work for loyal customers. They swipe their card and earn points every time they make a sale. The points will eventually allow them to get an item from the store.

As a book store owner, how do I offer this to my clients?

1- Go to Tutuka’s website

Swift and simple, the prepaid process is both easy and beneficial with Tutuka.

*closed loop cards are those issued by a specific merchant and can only be redeemed at that same merchant.

An app that tells you exactly where there are available discounts? Sounds too good to be true. I downloaded this app, and it is true!

After downloading via my phone’s store, (available on iTunes, google Play and for Blackberry ), I completed the easy sign-up process, and then I was spoilt with competitions as well as vouchers and coupons for discounts and free items. These are available via voucher codes, links to the retailer websites, it saves on your app, and you can even print out a voucher. The service is available via the app, as well as on the vouchercloud website.

The vouchers, coupons, and links all display the expiry date, as well as the available days that it may be redeemed. The app detects your location via your phones GPS, and tells you where the available offers are closest to you.

You can even browse via category to have a look at what you may be in the hunt for, be it dining, travel, fashion, gardening, electrical, sports and much more.

1-2-Pay-Online-logo1-1024x372

I am one of those people who are a bit sceptical about getting a credit card. Yes, they may be useful for purchasing online, for booking flights, which honestly is probably the only reason I would consider getting one. However, my fear in getting a credit card comes from the idea that I would overspend, maxing out my card especially knowing that I can rely on it as my emergency cash float when times are a little dry financially.

That’s where products like the 1-2-Pay-Online virtual card comes in handy, now I am able to shop online, book my flights and fulfill all my online purchasing needs with this one virtual card, without the concern of getting swipe happy with my credit card

Developed by Triloq Payment Services, a World of Avatar company and issued by Standard Bank in association with MasterCard, the system was created to remove barriers for would-be online shoppers and to increase online sales across the board and is designed for online shopping use only.

Registration for the virtual card is pretty straight forward and is open to any South African with a valid ID number. You can register on the 1-2-Pay-Online website in order to create and use the virtual prepaid cards. Online shopping demands the highest level of security and therefore the 1-2-Pay-Online virtual prepaid card created may only be used once, on any websites accepting VISA or MasterCard. Any funds left over are returned to the user profile. Should you wish to shop online again just create another virtual prepaid card, it’s as easy as that.

With no lengthy application forms, no credit checks, no annual fees, no interest charges or any other hidden fees you simply pay as you go.

As simple as that, music and movie enthusiasts can now pay for their favourite tracks and videos on iTunes using the virtual card and can even skip the queues when paying for E-Toll bills. Just like that, the 1-2-Pay-Online virtual card is making payments and shopping that much simpler and so much more convenient.

The value of cards you may create is dependent on whether or not you have been FICA verified by 1-2-Pay-Online, all for your safety and security. A non-FICA verified user can create cards up to maximum value of R200. If you are a FICA verified user then you may create cards up to a value of R1500.

To pay for your E-Toll bill, for example, you would then register for and load your 1-2-Pay-Online virtual card with the relevant amount, log on to the E-Toll website and click on online payments under their ‘payment options’ tab, log in and pay for your bills using  your virtual card like you would with a credit card.

Each virtual card you create will have a unique 16-digit card number, expiry date and security number (usually referred to as the CVV/CVC or “last three digits” on the back of the card).

The great thing about this virtual card is that, even when you have loaded too much money on your card, the remaining balance will then be credited to your 1-2-Pay-Online profile, for you to use the next time you  register for a card.

Now there’s no more worry about overspend, with 1-2-Pay-Online, online shopping is as easy as 1-2 -(3)!

Ever wanted to spoil someone with the perfect getaway, but you weren’t too sure on where they’d like to go?

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about this, particularly because I know of quite a few people getting married soon. The one question I find is commonly asked is, “So, where are you guys planning on going for your honeymoon?”

Tradition believes that it is the responsibility of the groom, or the groom’s family to take care of the honeymoon arrangements, but what if you want to surprise your bride with a trip to somewhere she’s actually being longing to visit, but just don’t know the place?

Or even moving away from weddings, wouldn’t a great Christmas, birthday or even anniversary gift be a nice travel getaway to destination of choice for whoever you may be surprising?

Flight Centre has found a solution to this almost ‘travel trivia’, if I could call it that. The Flight Centre gift card has become the perfect answer to all your travel decision making dilemmas.  Loadable to any amount from R100 to R20 000, choose to surprise your new bride, a friend, a family member or a loved one with a travel voucher giving them the opportunity to choose their destination of choice.

Flight Centre gift cards are now available from any of their 120 stores nationwide and can be used as partial or full payment towards flights, accommodation, packages, tours, car hire and more. The Flight Centre gift cards are also available to be redeemed at any of the Flight Centre branches.

So whether you’ve been wanting to surprise someone with a voucher towards their dream holiday to Thailand, gift someone a weekend away accommodation stay or offer them a chauffeured car hire experience and the likes, the Flight Centre gift card seems to be the perfectly packaged gift to make anyone’s travel dreams come true.

*For more about the gift card or how to purchase it, visit your nearest Flight Centre store and speak to one of their travel experts.

If you thought that the only way you could win at Montecasino was by trying your hand of luck at their casino slots and tables, think again as the popular Johannesburg destination has introduced their new rewards card programme.

The Montecasino rewards programme is open to all persons over the age of 18 to benefit from instant rewards, immediate earnings like points earned when playing at slots and tables, free or exclusive parking, movie and event discounts, restaurant and accommodation discounts and much more.

In order to register for the programme, all I had to do was to visit the customer service desk at Montecasino on the main casino floor. The desk is open 24 hours, 7 days a week and all that was requested from me was either my South African ID, driver’s licence or passport in order to sign up for the card which was free.

Just like that, I was issued my very own Montecasino rewards card and could instantly start reaping the rewards that come with my gold piece of plastic.

The rewards programme works on a points accumulation basis. The more I use my card by swiping it at the slot machines and tables, the more points I accumulate. The gold card is the programme’s base card, so once I accumulate 5 000 points over a rolling 12 month period, I will then qualify for a platinum card and after accumulating 150 000 points, I then move up to black card status. All points accumulated on my card are valid for 12 months before expiration, if they are not used.

With every different type of card status (from gold to black) different discounts apply. The higher you are ranked as a cardholder, the higher the discounts you receive from playing at the casino to parking, eating, accommodation, entertainment and more.

  • To redeem your points as gaming points, simply insert your card into the slot machine card reader and follow the prompts to convert your points to credits. Visit the customer service desk for information on how to convert your points to tables credits.
  • Benefit from the parking perks by exchanging your parking ticket for a R10 FreePlay voucher at the customer service desk, giving you a chance to play at the slots for the money you used to pay for parking.
  • Receive entertainment discounts by presenting your ID and active card when booking show tickets or movie tickets.
  • Receive discounts on meals at selected restaurants at Montecasino by presenting your valid card.
  • As a cardholder also get 10% accommodation discount on standard rates at participating Tsogo Sun hotels in South Africa (excludes the Garden Court and StayEasy hotels) and 5% accommodation discount on the SunBreaks leisure rates.

Please note that all cardholders will be notified via SMS and Email of various promotions, from shows to restaurant discounts, to get your points balance, as well as their expiry.

Rewards cards like these are a great way of increasing customers and interest into your establishment, whether it be a store, salon, retailer or, in this case, a casino.

And for friends or family members visiting from out of town, or who would like a taste of what’s on offer at Montecasino, spoil them with a Montecasino gift card. For everything from dining to shopping, a hotel stay, a spa treatment or entertainment, a Montecasino gift card offers endless opportunities. Get a gift card loaded to a minimum value of R50 and a maximum value of R3500, giving you a variety of choice.

Gift cards are accepted by selected stores and service outlets at Montecasino and can be purchased at the Montecasino information desk.

So now you too can be a winner at Montecasino, simply by signing up for their rewards programme , swiping and earning some instant points to enjoy however best suits you. If not, how about a spoil with a Montecasino gift card? proving why Montecasino can confidently say “We’ve Got It”.
