I am one of those people who are a bit sceptical about getting a credit card. Yes, they may be useful for purchasing online, for booking flights, which honestly is probably the only reason I would consider getting one. However, my fear in getting a credit card comes from the idea that I would overspend, maxing out my card especially knowing that I can rely on it as my emergency cash float when times are a little dry financially.

That’s where products like the 1-2-Pay-Online virtual card comes in handy, now I am able to shop online, book my flights and fulfill all my online purchasing needs with this one virtual card, without the concern of getting swipe happy with my credit card

Developed by Triloq Payment Services, a World of Avatar company and issued by Standard Bank in association with MasterCard, the system was created to remove barriers for would-be online shoppers and to increase online sales across the board and is designed for online shopping use only.

Registration for the virtual card is pretty straight forward and is open to any South African with a valid ID number. You can register on the 1-2-Pay-Online website in order to create and use the virtual prepaid cards. Online shopping demands the highest level of security and therefore the 1-2-Pay-Online virtual prepaid card created may only be used once, on any websites accepting VISA or MasterCard. Any funds left over are returned to the user profile. Should you wish to shop online again just create another virtual prepaid card, it’s as easy as that.

With no lengthy application forms, no credit checks, no annual fees, no interest charges or any other hidden fees you simply pay as you go.

As simple as that, music and movie enthusiasts can now pay for their favourite tracks and videos on iTunes using the virtual card and can even skip the queues when paying for E-Toll bills. Just like that, the 1-2-Pay-Online virtual card is making payments and shopping that much simpler and so much more convenient.

The value of cards you may create is dependent on whether or not you have been FICA verified by 1-2-Pay-Online, all for your safety and security. A non-FICA verified user can create cards up to maximum value of R200. If you are a FICA verified user then you may create cards up to a value of R1500.

To pay for your E-Toll bill, for example, you would then register for and load your 1-2-Pay-Online virtual card with the relevant amount, log on to the E-Toll website and click on online payments under their ‘payment options’ tab, log in and pay for your bills using  your virtual card like you would with a credit card.

Each virtual card you create will have a unique 16-digit card number, expiry date and security number (usually referred to as the CVV/CVC or “last three digits” on the back of the card).

The great thing about this virtual card is that, even when you have loaded too much money on your card, the remaining balance will then be credited to your 1-2-Pay-Online profile, for you to use the next time you  register for a card.

Now there’s no more worry about overspend, with 1-2-Pay-Online, online shopping is as easy as 1-2 -(3)!

The beginning of the year always seems like a time when people flock to the gym in an effort to burn off the extra calories gained over the holidays and also to become more fit. Even apart from this, it seems to be the time of the year when there’s an influx of various fun runs, marathons, challenges and fitness programs.

I have one friend who is very fond of this time of the year, particularly because he is somewhat of a fitness freak.

From registering for nearly every marathon, to preparing months in advance, he definitely is one determined guy, set on his fitness goals.

While browsing the internet I came across the Sportsmans Warehouse website which informed me of their online gift card purchases, which I was totally unaware of.

Immediately, I thought this would be a great way of getting a gift (which he could choose for himself) for my friend for one of his races, especially because we now live in different cities.

All I had to do was to visit the Sportsmans Warehouse website to register for an online gift card which would automatically be sent to my friend, simply by filling in this online form.sportsmans formAfter I had chosen the amount of the gift card, which ranged between R100 and R1000, I specified my friend’s details and added the gift card to my cart like a product. Payments can be made using MasterCard and Visa credit and debit cards which are registered with any South African bank. EFT payments are also accepted.

Once I checked out and my payment was confirmed, the voucher was sent to his email address. So when my friend wanted to make his purchase at a Sportsmans Warehouse in his city, all he had to do was to present the emailed gift card to the cashier to be redeemed.

SMS or Email vouchers such as these presented by Sportsmans Warehouse are a great way of reducing the risk of loss or theft by not having physical vouchers.

Now purchasing vouchers for my fitness fanatic friends, both near and far, has become as simple as a few clicks.

*Please note that the Sportsmans Warehouse gift cards are currently only redeemable in their stores and are not valid for online purchases.

If we really think about it, retailers are not simply trying to sell the products in their store. They’re not just trying to sell high quality merchandise or great customer service or unique items.

Retailers essentially need to sell a reason for customers to return to their store, and for more people to visit their establishment.

What better way to do this than through rewards cards that will ensure business will continuously walk through its doors? The customer will make a purchase and earn points for making that purchase. This will get them closer to affording a ‘rewards gift’ and so they keep returning to build up more points and to get closer to the free item.

Last week I looked at the possible ways I could use Tutuka’s online self-service option to create closed loop prepaid accounts for hotels and restaurants. Retailers can implement similar avenues for their customers to benefit from prepaid.

If I were a retailer I would consider several prepaid options for my store:

1-       Gift cards

  • Gift – Samantha needs to buy a gift for a friend’s son. Teenagers are fussy and she has no clue what to get. She buys him a gift card so he can pick what he likes.
  • Control spending – Samantha has a daughter in high school who needs new clothes before she leaves on holiday. Samantha can’t get time off work to take her shopping. Instead of giving her daughter her credit card she buys her a gift card so her spending is controlled.
  • Manage returns – Instead of handing a customer cash back when they return an item, I can give them a gift card for the same value so I don’t lose out on the sale.

2-       SMS vouchers

Samantha has another daughter studying away from home. Her daughter would like to update her wardrobe as well but doesn’t as yet have a bank account so Samantha can’t send her money easily. SMS vouchers are the perfect option so she doesn’t have to send her daughter a physical card and her spending is still controlled.

3-       Rewards cards

After all these purchases at my store, I want to reward Samantha for her loyalty and so I give her a rewards card that she can swipe every time she makes a purchase. Her points will eventually earn her a free item from my store. It will also help her move up rewards tiers so she becomes eligible for discounts.

4-       Incentive cards

To encourage my staff to make sales I give them a commission in the form of points, similar to how a rewards card would work for loyal customers. They swipe their card and earn points every time they make a sale. The points will eventually allow them to get an item from the store or can be exchanged for cash.
