The closing date for the competition is this Friday, 25 April. Entering this competition is easy, as interacting on social media is already part of our daily activity. Give it a try as Old Khaki have a wicked winter offering just waiting for you to grab it.

With just over a week to go, Valentines Day is fast approaching us. For many, it’s a time to celebrate love, while for others, it may just be a day to say “love sucks” and move on.

Personally, when I think of Valentines Day, immediately what comes to mind are heart-shaped chocolates, roses and little notes handed out at school from “secret admirers”.

This Valentines Day, Old Khaki is asking “What Valentines Day makes you think back on?” with their V-Day Flashbacks competition, giving you the opportunity to win R1500 worth of Old Khaki vouchers.

How the competition works is pretty straight forward, and with social media usage being so popular, entering this competition should come as second nature to many.

So what exactly would I have to do to enter?

The V-Day Flashbacks competition opened this week Monday and continues until February, 12th and calls all lovesick nostalgics to share their best Valentines Day memories via either Facebook or Twitter.

If you are planning on entering on Facebook, visit the Old Khaki Facebook page, like it and scroll down their timeline to the post about the competition. There, leave you comment about your best Valentines Day memory and see if you can stand out from the rest.

If you are entering on Twitter, visit the Old Khaki Twitter handle, follow them and tweet them with either a short explanation of picture of your best Valentines Day gift.

All entrants are able to enter the competition, both on Facebook and Twitter, and winners will be announced on Wednesday, February, 12.

Entrants can stand a chance at winning one of two R1500 Old Khaki vouchers, one for each of the social media platform entries.

Use your gift card to spoil your loved one for Valentines Day, maybe to get that perfect gift, or even an outfit, the choice is yours and all you need to do is enter.

So even if Valentines Day isn’t quite your thing, this Old Khaki competition might just be the perfect way to add a little extra love to your day.

declare your love

Woolworths is spreading the love this season by giving away their R10 000 share of Woolworths gift cards to love-struck social media fans with their latest #declareyourlove competition.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, love is in the air so why don’t you share some of it and stand a chance to win a R250 Woolworths gift voucher to spend on anything from clothing to shoes, accessories, underwear or even food.

Excited about this promotion, I immediately visited the Woolworths website where I got the necessary information I needed so that I, too, could be part of all of the love and submit my entry.

How the competition works is that, as a Woolworths shopper, declare your love via social media with a short poem, pic, witticism or anything that would make a heart happy.

Whether you are in a relationship, want to share a loving moment with family or even a best friend, Woolworths is encouraging the sharing of love and wants you to join to stand a chance to win, their way of sharing their love with you.

From February, 3 until February, 14, declare your love on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram by using the hashtag #declareyourlove. Woolworths will then contact a winner via the profile you have entered with at 4pm each day.

So, I did just that. I declared my love via Twitter, by tweeting a picture and short poem, remembering to end it off with my hashtag: #declareyourlove.

Now all I need to do is wait and see if I am a winner, so that I can spread a little more love through my love of shopping all thanks to Woolworths and their giveaway of love this season.

If there is one thing I dread doing, it’s going grocery shopping each month. Other than the actual increase in grocery costs, just the effort of having to go grocery shopping is a hassle for me. Now, Shoprite and Checkers stores have made shopping all that easier by motivating their customers through their Great Giveaway Competitions.

Shoprite and Checkers stores are running their Great Giveaway Competitions during the months of January and early February, allowing customers to enter online, standing a chance to win a R250 gift card every day.

A Checkers shopper myself, I decided to have a look at what the giveaway was all about and try my luck.

The whole process was actually quite simple. All I had to do to stand a chance to win was to visit the competition Facebook page, like their page and then register my details on their online entry form.

Running from January, 10 2014 until February, 7 2014 the competition simply requires you to enter online to stand a chance to win.

On the last day of The Great Gift Giveaway, entrants stand a chance to win an Apple iPad Mini with 16GB WiFi and 3G.
Prizes will be couriered to the prize winners address stated on the entry form.
The greatest part about this competition is that, with gift cards, even though you may have already done your grocery shopping for the month, you can use your gift card to purchase in the coming months. But that’s not all, use your gift card as the perfect R250 contribution towards that special gift or buy that you have been saving towards.
The possibilities with gift cards are endless and now Checkers is giving you the chance to win your very own gift card every day.

It’s officially December, which means that Christmas is just around the corner and already my excitement is starting to build up.

I love this time of the year, it’s almost as if the Christmas spirit is in the air. This time of the year, for me, means family, loved ones, presents, appreciation and who can miss the food.

It’s become family tradition each year for my entire family to gather at a relative’s home, where we would set the table, open gifts together and just spend the day eating, laughing and having a great time together. Speaking of traditions, a lot of the food served on Christmas Day include traditional home cooked meals and desserts, from curries to roasts and even the gammon.

No-one can make gammon the way the women in my family do. With the perfect combination of sweet and sour, they use a special traditional family recipe of preparing the pork by glazing it with a mixture of apricot jam, lemon and cinnamon which is layered on the top and the gammon before cooking.

There are plenty of traditional tricks and recipes common in many families and now is your chance to bring out the old recipes to stand a chance to win a R5000 Pick n Pay gift card.

A R5000 gift card could mean all your Christmas grocery shopping is covered, at no expense to you. Now you can whip up all those secret family recipes, without worrying about what it’ll cost you. Pick n Pay is known for stocking goods ranging from groceries to clothing and other goods, so winning the R5000 gift card could also alleviate the stress of spending on Christmas gifts.

Confident about my family Gammon cooking secret, I entered the competition which proved to be quite straight forward.

The competition offers entrants the opportunity to enter in any one of three ways, namely:

Don’t forget to use #picknpaychristmas on your Facebook and Twitter entries. All entrants have to be Standard Bank clients and signed up for the uCount Rewards programme and Pick n Pay SmartShopper Card holders.

I entered via Twitter simply by tweeting my family cooking secret to @PicknPay and not forgetting to add the competition hashtag at the end.

Just like that, in less than two minutes, I entered and now wait to hear if I’m the lucky winner.

The advancement of technology has enhanced the human experience by an unquantifiable extent. A secondary result is the availability of several ‘crutches’ that the human brain can lean on to get its job done.

Who needs to remember birthdays when facebook will so kindly remind you? Why take note of the great point that article made when you can just save the link and revisit  it at your leisure?

The inevitable result of this is a generation that will not remember events unless they’ve been posted onto digital calendars, will take pictures of Powerpoint presentations in a lecture instead of writing down notes and who have more important things to concern themselves with than the mundane necessity of drawing money and having cash on hand to pay for daily travel.

Enter Gautrain Gold Card.

The prepaid card for commuters has eradicated the problematic need for public transport users to constantly make sure they have the right amount of cash on hand to be able to get home after work or to make their way to Sandton for a shopping trip. In the age of plastic, where a growing number of people are more comfortable swiping cards everywhere they go, as opposed to carrying cash around, this is especially helpful.

The gold card can be purchased from the sales desk at any Gautrain station for R12 and is used for the bus and train services, as well as for parking.

Users can load value onto the card via electronic card terminals that accept both cash and bank cards. Instead of topping up daily, Gautrain commuters can load any amount that is convenient for them, whether it be enough for a week’s worth of travel or a month.

Card scanners on the busses and at the train platform entrances read the cards and deduct the relevant amounts.

  • Convenient
  • Safer than carrying cash
  • One prepaid card works seamlessly for all Gautrain services

  • If you’ve forgotten to load money onto your card you cannot make use of the bus and will be left stranded, since the only method for loading money onto a card is at the terminals at the station. However, every station has several terminals so remember to top up!

In a surprising move, Facebook is rolling out a new commerce product: gift cards. What makes this move interesting is these preloaded cards will work with retailers in the real world. Initial launch partners are US only and include Jamba Juice, Olive Garden, Sephora and Target.

Facebook is targeting a multibillion-dollar business as it tries to regain the confidence of investors who continue to be worried about the company’s money-making potential. Investors are pinning their hopes on Facebook making a major play in commerce.

How the gift cards work: You send the cards to your friends through Facebook’s Gifts product. Once a card is purchased, your friend is alerted. A few days later, the friend receives a card in the mail. Users can keep track of the balance online. One card works with all of the retailers and can have multiple balances, say for bread sticks at Olive Garden or a box of diapers at Target. The balances can be monitored on Facebook mobile apps.

The program is being rolled out gradually, and right now it’s only in the U.S. But it’s not an experiment — this appears to be a program that Facebook is very sure about.
