With only one more sleep until Christmas, I am one of those people running around frantically looking for Christmas gifts, especially because I have family in town visiting over the festive period.

Being from a smaller city, I decided to take my family to Sandton City to browse around the shops and have a bit of a look around, that way also giving me some idea of what they would want as gifts.

However, I felt a little bit like I had shot myself in the foot because of all the different likes received at the different goods at the many stores.

Almost giving up hope on what to get each of them, I tried to simplify the process for myself by letting them decide for themselves what they wanted to get and my answer came packaged in a gold wrapped envelope and two words…gift card.

Being somewhat of a confusing person to buy a gift for, myself, I’m not sure why I hadn’t thought of this idea sooner.

Gift cards are always great options to get as Christmas, birthday or even anniversary gifts, that way, as the buyer, you aren’t left with the worry of whether or not your gift will be enjoyed or even kept and as the gift receiver, the option is yours as to how you want to spend your gift and it’s a much safer and more modern way rather than gifting someone with cash.

So off I went and purchased my gift cards, which was a pleasant experience. All I needed to do was to go to one of the gift card counters at the mall, ask for the amount I wanted and present my ID or driver’s license before paying.

Sandton city is one of the largest shopping malls in South Africa and with over 300 stores and hundreds of thousands of shoppers a month, both locally and internationally, their gift card offering is world class. The Sandton City MasterCard gift card was launched in 2007 and has been tremendously popular since.

Gift cards, like the ones sold at Sandton City, have been proven to increase sales and feet within a shopping centre, make use as great marketing tools and are a step ahead from paper vouchers as used in the past.

As a customer, needless to say, gift cards are definitely the future in shopping freedom.

Another successful year has come and gone for us at Tutuka and we would like to take some time to celebrate the wonderful achievements of the year that was 2013.

We have won awards, have grown in staff, had many great highlights and are still growing from strength to strength.

To celebrate this amazing year we put together an infographic with some of our favourite moments and stats from 2013.

Here’s to bigger and better things for 2014 and to sharing more of these memorable moments with our friends, partners, clients and the prepaid industry!

Thank You from Tutuka!

MasterCard holders are in luck and can experience pure luxury with the MasterCard Priceless Africa Program, an exclusive collection of experiences especially designed for cardholders to explore unique moments in cities and places across South Africa.

Let your MasterCard reward you with priceless moments and offers as a way of thanking you for being a loyal member. Experience all your favourite activities ranging from dining to shopping, sports, having a look at some exciting attractions, travel, entertainment and much more.

Excited to explore which options I could treat myself to through the Priceless Africa Program, I registered online at www.pricelessafrica.com by filling in all my details and creating my very own profile.

Hereafter, the options were endless for me to choose from and to redeem, so I browsed through the different experiences available to me before making my choice.

After browsing through various travel and dining options, it only made sense for me to choose something that would be accessible to me in Johannesburg, so I opted for a “Buy 1 & get 1 free” offer at the Karoo Cattle and Land restaurant.

The Selcted Offer

My next step was to actually redeem my voucher by clicking on “Get Voucher” which then took me to a page instructing me what I would need to do to qualify for the special.

The Confirmation after selecting the offer

As instructed, I redeemed my voucher by viewing and printing it, it was that simple! Now I have the voucher loaded on to my profile, allowing me to print it again, should my copy get lost or damaged. Online vouchers, such as these and similarly, SMS vouchers, are a fast growing phenomenon. From other companies and brands like Shoprite to Groupon and more, online vouchers are seemingly becoming the way forward in shopping trends.

The Voucher itself

So there you have it, I just scored a dinner, including a complimentary dinner for a partner, all thanks to MasterCard. I can now choose to spoil a family member, friend or a loved one in a range of ways through this new offering and I’m excited to explore more new MasterCard memories to come. Go all out this festive and spoil yourself with some amazing treats like these.

The Christmas season is always filled with the hustle and bustle of running around, trying to figure out if you’ve bought enough presents for everyone, if  you’ve budgeted enough for your spends and if the grocery cupboards are stocked up for all your visitors. I now understand why this time of the year has also been dubbed, “the silly season”, because it seems that the amount of spending – even sometimes without realising it – can become quite silly and overwhelming.

Various banks. including FNB eBucks, Nedbank Greenbacks, Standard Bank UCount Rewards and Investec’s Dividents Rewards Programme, have introduced their very own rewards programmes for times just like these. Simply by swiping your card, depending on who you bank with, you can instantly gain rewards which can be saved and used when you need that extra cash to spend.

Because I bank with Absa, I was able to reap the benefits of the Absa Rewards programme where I pay only R21 a month to gain rewards everytime I swipe my debit card. Rewards redemptions vary in amounts, depending on where I swipe my card, offering me highter redemptions if I swipe at any of Absa’s redemption partners.

You can imagine my surprise this week when I realised I could spend a little bit more without the added expense, all thanks to my Absa Rewards and my Pick n Pay Smart Shopper account.

My family have decided to visit me in Johannesburg for Christmas this year. Being Christmas time, I want to be able to spoil them with yummy treats and sweet goodies, especially for my younger little cousins, making their Christmas away from home that much more memorable.

My Absa Rewards, which I had gained from swiping my Absa debit card at various outlets, allows me the option of choosing to redeem my rewards either as cash, airtime, shopping vouchers, giving back to charity or redeeming through their Redemption Partners (Pick n Pay Smart Shopper points or Dischem Benefit Programme points). This came in really handy to get those extra grocery goods for the family and redeeming my Absa Rewards as Pick n Pay Smart Shopper points was such an easy process.

All I had to do was to call the Absa Rewards customer care line on 0861 788 888. Once I was on the line, I prompted to press number “1” on my phone which gave me the option of redeeming my rewards. I was then put through to an operator who was very helpful in converting my rewards to my Smart Shopper points, now redeemable at any Pick n Pay. All I had to do was to provide him with my South African ID number, he confirmed my details, asked how much of my rewards I wanted redeemed as Smart Shopper points and just like that, it was done.

To make things even better, because of this kind of redemption of my Absa Rewards, I gained an extra 15% on the amount redeemed, giving me even more to spend.

For security purposes and to keep me, as the customer, in the know about my transactions, I received two SMSes, one alerting me of my redemption transaction and another letting me know what my remaining rewards balance was.

You can redeem your Absa Rewards online too if you are registered with their online or cellphone banking. If not, visit their website to sign up.

As easy as that, I was able to go to my nearest Pick n Pay and spend using my Smart Shopper points, without any extra expense to me. Now I can spoil my family, with no extra costs incurred. I’ve rewarded myself this Christmas, why don’t you?

South Africa welcomes iTunes Gift Cards to their shelves as Apple enthusiasts can now shop at the iTunes store to their heart’s content.

Just in time for Christmas, the iTunes Gift Card, valid only on the iTunes Store for South Africa, could be just the gift you were looking to buy a family member, friend or loved one. Available at all South African iStores, Pick n Pay, Makro and DionWired stores, getting your hands on one is pretty simple. Gift card denominations range between R150, R250 and R450 gift cards.

Yesterday I went out and tried out one of these new funky designed cards and was amazed at how simple it was to use.

An iTunes novice myself, I thought that buying, loading and purchasing with the gift card would be quite the feat, but much to my surprise, it was fairly simple.

Rushing off to my nearest Pick n Pay store in Johannesburg, I bought my first iTunes Gift Card to the value of R150 which I found on the racks at the till points right above all the chocolates and sweets.

Admittedly, actually buying the card itself proved to be the biggest hassle for me because of the staff at Pick n Pay who were unsure of how to scan the gift card, whether or not it had to be activated in store or even what the gift card was used for. But once I got this sorted out, I happily walked out of the store, card in hand and ready to make my very first iTunes purchase.

Personally, I don’t own any Apple devices, but fortunately, iTunes is available on Windows too, so using the gift card on a regular PC will work just as well. But if you are an Apple fanatic, the gift card can be redeemed on your Mac, iPhone, iPod touch or iPad.

All it took were five simple steps including:

  • Opening iTunes and clicking on the iTunes Store
  • Clicking on ‘redeem’
  • Peeling off the label and entering the code
  • Downloading the content that I wanted and that’s it

I was impressed at the efficiency and simplicity in using the gift card. In my opinion, the iTunes gift cards should be a hit with sky-rocketing sales.

Needless to say, this won’t be my last time trying it out and I definitely recommend it as the perfect gift this Christmas.

*The iTunes gift card in South Africa is distributed by OpenGate.

It’s been eight years since the processing of the first MasterCard shopping centre gift cards in South Africa and Tutuka staff celebrated in true birthday fashion, blowing out candles and cutting a cake.

In 2005, Tutuka launched South Africa’s first prepaid MasterCard. This now opened new opportunities for shopping centres and meant that they could have their own shopping centre gift cards with their own centre branding and the card could be used at any store within the shopping centre.

The card was then launched at five shopping centres around South Africa. These were particularly selected because of their significance in size and distribution around the country. Tutuka, together with Standard Bank, MasterCard and Altech supported these cards.

Today there are approximately 50 shopping centres around South Africa that use the prepaid MasterCard gift cards.

“Having launched the very first open loop gift cards in South Africa 8 years ago when the concept was not known, and watching it grow to a stage where these cards are issued at most shopping centres and by corporates is a proud achievement,”  said Tutuka’s Director of New Business and Marketing, Drisha Nair.

“We could not have accomplished this without the help of our partners Standard Bank, MasterCard and Altech. The partnership has resulted in the largest footprint of MasterCard gift cards issuance across South Africa.”

Here’s to a eight great and very successful years and many, many more to come in the future.
