An app that tells you exactly where there are available discounts? Sounds too good to be true. I downloaded this app, and it is true!

After downloading via my phone’s store, (available on iTunes, google Play and for Blackberry ), I completed the easy sign-up process, and then I was spoilt with competitions as well as vouchers and coupons for discounts and free items. These are available via voucher codes, links to the retailer websites, it saves on your app, and you can even print out a voucher. The service is available via the app, as well as on the vouchercloud website.

The vouchers, coupons, and links all display the expiry date, as well as the available days that it may be redeemed. The app detects your location via your phones GPS, and tells you where the available offers are closest to you.

You can even browse via category to have a look at what you may be in the hunt for, be it dining, travel, fashion, gardening, electrical, sports and much more.

During the busy Christmas season and the sudden spike in shopping trends, everybody is out to look for a bargain wherever they can get one.

This season, Woolworths Rewards (WRewards) members are in luck, as you can score a R50 discount off clothing purchases to the value of R250 or more.

As a WRewards member myself, I was pleasantly surprised to get an SMS issuing me with a voucher number, making me liable for the great discount. This came just at the right time, as Christmas time is always perfect to cash in on those discounts to get gifts, buy some last minute goods or even just to treat yourself.

SMS vouchers are a great way of issuing vouchers and helps to reduce the risk of voucher loss and theft. When a customer receives a SMS voucher, they will need to present the SMS at the preferred shopping centre or retailer, in this case, Woolworths, where the voucher can then be redeemed directly from the SMS. Many banks are using these kinds of vouchers for their rewards programmes like Absa Rewards, FNB eBucks and others as well as retailers like Sportsmans Warehouse, Woolworths and Makro to name just a few. They have all moved with the times and have become technologically savvy in issuing these kinds of vouchers.

So off I went to my nearest Woolworths store, excited to purchase my goods and reap the benefits of my R50 discount on any clothing items, except for the Country Road and Trenery brands.

I must commend the staff at the Woolworths branch who were very friendly and helpful to answering any questions I had to ask about the discount voucher, from whether or not it qualified to both adult and children clothing purchases, underwear and the likes, which it did apply to.

After gathering all my wanted purchases, I headed to the till where the cashier rung up all my items and swiped my WRewards card, allowing me to, on top of my discount, gain rewards on my purchases. She then requested for my SMS voucher number that was sent to me. After entering the number into the system, automatically R50 was deducted off my total amount, leaving me happy and saving some on my buy.

Christmas is the time for giving and Woolworths have remained true to just that by rewarding their WRewards clients. If the Christmas spirit alone isn’t enough to have you feeling happy, redeem your Woolies R50 discount and add that little bit of extra cheer to your season.

*The WRewards discount is only valid until 14 December 2013 and includes all clothing purchases except for the Trenery and Country Road brands.

I am one of those people who have a number of loyalty cards, from my Pick and Pay Smart Shopper, to a Woolworths Rewards Card, Edgars Reward Card, Spar Loyalty Card and so many others. However, the problem I have is overloading my purse with all these cards, or even worse, making a purchase at one of the shops, only to realize that I’ve left one of my cards at home,  therefore missing out on a chance to achieve rewards.

I recently came across the Cardless Loyalty Card App, available on the Android Market and at the iPhone Store and is free to download.

Now, those card crazed loyalty shoppers like me can store as many loyalty cards on your Cardless account as you want. No more worries about leaving your cards at home and missing out on gaining loyalty points or rewards. The cards are digitally stored on your smartphone.

It’s a no fuss app, that’s quick and easy to download and convenient to have. According to the Cardless Loyalty card App website. All it takes is a simple download of the app, opening an account, loading your loyalty cards and highlighting your favourites and then shopping and earning.

Loyalty customers can now swipe and earn with ease without having to waste time digging in their bags, wallets and purses for their cards. Forget about wear and tear on your cards or numbers which have faded. Shoppers this Christmas can concern themselves more with carrying the plenty of Christmas goodies they’ll be buying and the rewards they’ll be earning, no cards, no fuss, just your smartphone.

Tech4Africa

Currently in its fourth year, the Tech4Africa conference came to Johannesburg last week Thursday and Friday (9-10 October).

According to their website, Tech4Africa is considered to be “the premier African technology event for everyone interested in technology in Africa”. Hosting over 600 delegates this year, the conference ran over two days with a core focus on technical workshops and sessions for practitioners. Delegates could also attend and enjoy interesting talks where knowledge on various subjects within the technical field was imparted.

Featuring a range of impressive speakers over the years, Tutuka’s very own software developer, Jurgens du Toit joined the ranks this year, offering his input in a talk entitled; “Is PHP the slums of the programming world?”. This included a discussion about PHP’s viability as a language in a modern web stack.

“I attended Tech4Africa for the first time last year, and decided that I’m going to try and speak at it this year. My experience is that people tend to disregard PHP as a modern language, and I wanted to address this…It’s not part of Tutuka’s web stack, but as I have quite a bit of experience with it, I decided to centre my talk around it,” said Jurgens about his involvement.

“Although the conference is somewhat business orientated, the first day’s focus is on development and developers, and a lot of technically minded people attend the first day. It’s a great opportunity to network and be exposed to other technologies and methodologies.”

As part of their programme, Tech4Africa also runs what they term “Developer Hackathons”, an opportunity, for those interested, to explore technology stacks, complex problems, emerging technologies and more.

We commend Jurgens on his involvement at the Tech4Africa conference and see this as an example of the expertise and knowledge-base housed at Tutuka.

Recognising Prepaid

Every industry should have a way of recognising exceptional companies and products. Prepaid is no exception to this. There are a few Prepaid Award functions throughout the year that honour those companies or products that have been innovative and leading in the world of prepaid. One of the larger prepaid events is the Global Prepaid Awards held yearly in London. To learn more about the awards go to http://www.prepaidawards.com.
These types of industry gatherings are always beneficial as you get to rub shoulders from industry players around the world. As a company you also get to compete on a global scale with others on both a company and product level. To be shortlisted as a finalist at the awards is an accomplishment for any company.
But of course there’s nothing like winning…. So holding thumbs for Tutuka to win at the Prepaid Awards “ Best Global/Corporate Prepaid programme for NuPay “ and ‘Best Global Innovation for ClaimsCard” !
