At the end of 2012 we reviewed a mobile money offering that was just at the beginning of its growth. The service allows you to purchase prepaid airtime and electricity, receive money, and deposit or withdraw money from Pick n Pay or Boxer stores. Nineteen months later, MTN have launched a mechanism which will allow you to take your money everywhere.

MTN have launched a VISA card for the Mobile Money users. This card can be purchased at Pick n Pay and Boxer stores, and can be ready for use within three days.

What can it do

The card will be connected to your Mobile Money, and has access to the funds that are stored in your Mobile Money account. The card can be used to pay for goods and services at merchants that accept VISA, as well as allow you to withdraw funds from it at ATM’s around the country (for when you need cash).

Costs

After purchasing the card pack for R29 (once-off), the MTN Mobile Money VISA card offers the card service without any annual or monthly fees, including unlimited free swipes.

Samsung’s fairly new Wallet is now available on the Google Play store.

The company created the wallet in response to Passbook that was launched by Apple for iOS.

A little competition is always good for the industry but the six-month old product is, at present, limited to the Galaxy S III, Galaxy S IV, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Note 2.

Samsung introduced the Wallet app in February this year and released the app in the Samsung Apps store in May.

It offers a virtual storage space that allows the management of event tickets, mobile boarding passes, loyalty cards and coupons.

Users can redeem passes and coupons by opening the app to display bar codes that are scanned at payment and check-in terminals.

The Wallet also features push notifications that remind users about coupons and tickets as they become relevant and that updates items like boarding passes that are already logged into it if details change. The notifications are also location based and so will alert users when Wallet-friendly stores, theatres or hotels are nearby.

Samsung’s Wallet has an open API, allowing easy integration for partners. The app also syncs all stored data across Samsung devices.

Despite the name, Samsung Wallet does not include mobile payment capabilities. However, earlier this year, Samsung said it will pre-install Visa’s NFC payWave app on all future smartphones.

Pros:

  • Essentially a virtual voucher manager
  • Allows ease of access to digital coupons and tickets in one space
  • Reminders about tickets so those bought long in advance are not forgotten
  • Location alerts when Wallet partners are nearby

Cons:

  • Only available in the US so far

With gaming consoles, the internet and cellphones being natural extensions of the typical gamer, Sony, in a wise move, has joined up with mobile payments company Boku to allow ease of payment for online content via users’ cellphones.

Users in the United Kingdom can now top up their Sony account wallet to obtain content from the PlayStation®Store and across the Sony Entertainment Network, using their mobile phone account.

This is how it works:

  •          Choose “mobile” as the payment option
  •          Enter a mobile phone number
  •          Respond via SMS to confirm the wallet top-up

steps

The wallet top-up charge will appear on the user’s next mobile phone bill, or will be debited against their pre-paid account.

Gordon Thornton, Vice President, Sony Network Entertainment Europe, said: “We are always looking at new ways to give our customers more choice in terms of content, accessibility and payment methods, and are pleased to be able to offer the option of mobile operator billing, which is becoming more and more popular”.

Mobile operator billing is indeed fast becoming a popular method of payment, with Microsoft’s Skype also recently offering direct carrier billing as a payment method. Microsoft’s Xbox.com has added this payment option as well.

Pros:

  •  Mobile operator billing is convenient and allows for a simple, easy payment process
  •  No credit card required so products and services are more widely accessible
  •  Security concerns around placing banking or credit card details online are alleviated

Sony says that enabling mobile payments makes the process easier for users to access and obtain downloadable games, add-ons, themes, movies and TV shows from its online content stores.

It explains that wallet top-ups with mobile operator billing can be made through the Sony Entertainment Network Account Management website and PlayStation®Store on PlayStation®3 (PS3™).

Currently, the Sony mobile billing system is only in place in the UK but hopefully South African gamers and Sony subscribers can expect the option soon.
